Film Facts & Figures 2016


A new Film Facts & Figures has been published, the annual report from the Netherlands Film Fund about the Dutch film sector, in collaboration with the Dutch Film Research Foundation.

After reaching a cinema visitor share of 18.8% the previous year, the Dutch share dropped to 12.3% in 2016. Mainly format driven commercial films suffered from audience decrease. Dutch arthouse and cross over films however managed to double their audience numbers and documentaries tripled theirs. Total revenues increased to € 579 million, fueled by a strong box office and VOD growth.

In 2016 the Netherlands Film Fund supported 666 out of 1370 applications with grants, investing a total of € 51.2 million. The share of total Fund support in released Dutch feature films increased from 34.8% to 41%.

The number of Dutch features released, reached 37 (2015: 46) with an average audience of 122,795, roughly the same level as the previous year.

In 2016 Dutch films entered the competitions of renowned international film festivals such as Venice, Locarno, Toronto, Sundance and San Sebastian. 47 feature-length films were selected to one of the major international film festivals. These films were awarded with 7 film prizes and there were 3 prizes for persons. The number of selections of documentaries, animation films, cinematic experiment & shorts internationally even reached 160. These films were awarded with 16 prizes and there was one prize for a film maker.

Also, for the third consecutive year, the admissions per capita in the Netherlands increased. Dutch people visited a cinema twice per person.
