On the occasion of the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival the European Audiovisual Observatory releases its first estimates for European cinema attendance in 2011. The Observatory estimates that total admissions in the European Union dropped marginally by 0.4% to 960 million tickets sold, from 964 million in 2010.

BRUSSEL – Vooral dankzij hogere entreeprijzen is de opbrengst van het bioscoopbezoek in de Europese Unie vorig jaar naar recordhoogte gestegen, want het aantal bezoekers daalde licht. Filmbezoekers telden in totaal bijna 6,45 miljard euro neer voor hun tickets, blijkt uit voorlopige cijfers die de Europese instelling European Audiovisual Observatory maandag bekend heeft gemaakt. Het aantal verkochte kaartjes daalde met 1,6 procent naar 967 miljoen. In Nederland was er wel een stijging van 27,3 naar 28,2 miljoen bezoekers, die in totaal 219,3 miljoen euro betaalden (201,1 miljoen in 2009).

The number of spectators in all of Europe’s cinemas continues to grow, from Portugal to Russia: in 2009 there were 1,179.3 million, rising to 1,184.6 million, with a 0.4% increase in 2010. These are the figures announced by MEDIA Salles in the traditional appointment at the Berlinale. If Europe as a whole is characterized by a positive trend, the analysis of individual markets, presented by Elisabetta Brunella, Secretary General of MEDIA Salles, reveals contradictory results. The 18 countries of Western Europe totalled 897.2 million spectators with a 2.6% decrease compared to 2009, when 921.2 million tickets were sold. Instead, Central-Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean Rim, comprising 15 countries, recorded considerable growth: 11.4. From 258.1 million, tickets sold rose to 287.4 million.

Het Europese bioscoopbezoek heeft het voorbije jaar een nieuw recordniveau bereikt, te danken aan Amerikaanse blockbusters en driedimensionale films. Dat blijkt uit cijfers van het European Audiovisual Observatory (EAO). Daarbij wordt opgemerkt dat de Europese bioscopen het voorbije jaar 981,1 miljoen tickets hebben verkocht. Dat is een stijging met 55,8 miljoen tickets tegenover het jaar voordien, ondanks de economische crisis die de consument ertoe heeft verplicht om zijn bestedingen terug te schroeven. De grootste groei werd opgetekend in Duitsland, waar 13,1 procent meer tickets werden verkocht.
